Alex was born in Cardiff, Wales, and has moved around a little throughout his life. He studied genomics for a year before realising it’s all just applied biochemistry, which is applied chemistry, which is applied physics, so he might as well just study physics.
Alex obtained his bachelor’s degree in physics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City. He then obtained his master’s degree and his PhD in biophotonics at Cardiff University, where he quickly realized he’d much rather spend a week trying to solve some hideous quadruple integral than spend a week wondering why the laser doesn’t work properly.
Since obtaining his PhD, he has worked as a researcher studying how light interacts with matter and its meaning. He currently teaches a course on light-matter interaction at university, allowing him to share his love for the subject with other people.
Apart from optics, he’s written the first draft of a fantasy novel which might one day be turned into a second draft. In his free time, if such a thing can be said to exist, he likes to spend time with his wife and dog, play tabletop RPGs, learn new languages and, when there isn’t a pandemic going on, go caving.
