Ep 8: Mycology is Beautiful Biology

Synopsis

Mycology is the ever so beautiful study of Fungi. Fungi are everywhere and involved in almost everything… they are the natural beings of both facilitating and embracing death of all biomass. Without fungi we wouldn’t enjoy many aspects of life such as beer, bread, plants, soil, and much much more. Our host Sam Stanford and the amazing Guest Stars below cover the history of Mycology, taxonomy, functions, benefits and much much more. In segment 2 of the podcast, a talk is given on Psilocybin and its applications for Hypnotherapy. Mycology has so many beautiful applications that could quite possibly shape our future, and with the help of this episode, we hope to spike your curiosity about fungi and pursue them intellectually, physically or the combination of the two. Enjoy!

Meet the Guest Stars

Jasper Degenaars

Jasper is the Chief Education Officer of Fungi Academy. Since he joined the Fungi Academy in 2019, Jasper has been on a quest to spread the magic of mushrooms with the world. Jasper is truly devoted to everything fungal from home-style cultivation, Ethnomycology, and fungal gastronomy.

I would also like to recognize that Jasper is the host of Paddopodcast. Paddopodcast is the first Dutch-language Podcast about all Fungus Heads in the Netherlands. Nice casual, fun conversations about mycology, psychedelics, spirituality and all the beautiful things in life.

Alan Rockefeller

Alan began his Mycology journey in 2001 with the fungi of California, and since then he has traveled to various countries to collect, photograph and study well over 1000 species of fungi from Mexico and 1000 species from the state of California. He has successfully identified many species of fungi that were not previously described in science literature and specializes in phylogenetic & microscopic analysis.

His work has been widely recognized and published by reporters of many sorts, such as the Washington Post, Scientific American, and much more. Just in 2020, Alan co-authored a publication characterizing five Psilocybin species! Let’s just say, Alan knows so much about mushrooms that if he doesn’t recognize one, it's likely an undiscovered one.

Lastly, Alan works for Mimosa Therapeutics, a company working on medicinal Psilocybin research and dispensary in Oakland, California. Check out their website for more information (Mimosa Therapeutics)

Maria Pusateri

Maria obtained a Bachelors of Science in Biology and Bachelors of Art in Dance at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

In her spare time, she is also a Professional Photographer & Yoga Instructor. Just a fun fact, Maria and I are cousins, and she is the first family member of mine to join the podcast. Also it is really cool to note that she and I are just a couple days apart in age!
