Synopsis
Chemistry is the fundamental building block of organic and inorganic substances. Without Chemistry.. we would be pretty lost and would more than likely still be dwelling in caves. So, to give you an appreciation for this wonderful field of STEAM, we brought in Chemist Tamara Ewing (Chemis.te). Throughout the episode, Tamara and I will discussing what Chemistry is in further depth, as well as some of the rich history behind its development. As we progress, Tamara will highlight her field of Organic Chemistry and what is specifically done in her laboratory. To end on a light note, Tamara and Sam discuss lab management in STEAM. Comparing labs in movies to the real world.

Meet the Guest Star
Tamara El-Hayek Ewing
“Tuh-maw-ruh El-hi-yek Yoo-wing”
Tamara is a lab manager at the Scripps Research Institute and shares her passion for chemistry through science communication and art on Instagram and TikTok under @chemis.te
She discovered a love for chemistry as a high schooler but didn’t really realize how exciting it was until she had to make it interesting for teenagers as a high school teacher herself. Following that short teaching career, she ventured back to school as a first-generation graduate student and earned a masters in chemistry which helped her land her current position. Her role is to support her lab group and make sure they have everything they need to accomplish their goals of synthesizing natural products and performing electrochemistry methodology studies.
Her love for chemistry has opened many doors for her and she hopes to continue sharing her story so that others who are just as passionate about STEAM can be inspired to pursue their dreams too.
